The Jura region of eastern France is isolated from the rest of the country by an imposing mountain range, and that geographical detachment has enabled an idiosyncratic local winemaking tradition to persist over centuries. In 1984, husband and wife team Chantal and Jean Berthet-Bondet purchased a 10 hectare estate in the Jura with the aim of preserving indigenous grape varietals and promoting the traditional styles of the region.
Their 2013 Côtes du Jura "Savagnier" is made from the local white grape Savagnin and named for a vineyard plot that is farmed organically by the Berthet-Bondets. After harvest, this French white wine is aged entirely in stainless steel and bottled unfined and unfiltered to showcase the unique personality of the varietal. The result is a refreshing, mineral-driven white with flavors of citrus and exotic fruits that lead to a distinctive nutty quality in the finish.
This French organic wine is a perfect pairing with richer foods like cured ham, mushrooms, and aged mountain cheeses, and with the addition of a custom label or engraving, it makes a unique and memorable gift.
