With a legacy that dates back to the 18th century, the Fossacolle estate occupies a privileged position in the south-facing hills overlooking Tuscany's Maremma. There, the Marchetti family crafts Brunello di Montalcino from 100 percent Sangiovese that grows in clay-rich soils and benefits from a subtle maritime influence. After harvesting the grapes by hand, the wine is aged in a mix of large Slovenian oak casks known as botte and modern 225-liter barriques to produce a pure expression of Sangiovese that is not overshadowed by the flavors of wood.
In the glass, Fossacolle’s 2012 Brunello boasts an intense ruby red color and bright aromas of ripe cherry, plum, and fresh herbs. On the palate, this full-bodied wine offers a smooth and supple texture that is framed by the tangy acidity of Sangiovese. This wine is approachable now but has the structure to carry it forward for another 10-15 years, making this an ideal gift for collectors or for anyone who loves Italian wine.
