The Prisoner Wine Company got its start in Napa Valley in 2000, when winemaker Dave Phinney released the original Prisoner Red Blend. That wine, with its dark, etching-style label, built a cult following for being rich and unconventional in a region known for polished, restrained styles. The brand has since expanded into a full lineup, and this Chardonnay carries the same bold, fruit-forward approach into a white wine.
The blend combines Chardonnay with small amounts of Roussanne and Gewurztraminer, grapes chosen from select California vineyards including cooler coastal sites that keep the acidity fresh. That mix is what gives the wine its aromatic lift alongside its full body.
On the nose, expect vanilla, creme brulee, and baked apple. The palate is full bodied and rich, with pineapple and toasted oak that integrate smoothly with balanced acidity and a smooth finish. It is built to pair with richer dishes: roasted chicken, cream based pasta, or aged cheeses.
